Down a winding road, right to the mouth of the Helford River is the Budock Vean Hotel, set within a golf course and with a brilliant restaurant, indoor swimming pool and plenty to do on site from tennis lessons to boat trips – it's a fantastic place to get away from it all.
The holiday homes are a new addition to Budock Vean and perfectly positioned on the path to the river, slightly apart from the hotel.
Sleeps
We stayed in 'Glebe' which had split accommodation with two twin rooms on the ground floor, one en suite –
and a family bathroom with large bottles of shampoo and body wash which I always love to see as it's so much better for the environment.
Then it's upstairs to the large open plan living are with clearly defined areas including a really well stocked kitchen with absolutely everything you would need to stay here long term, from a wine fridge to biscuit tins, they've really thought of everything.
There's a dining space that's perfect for family meal times –
And then a comfortable sofa area leading through to an additional seating area and then out to a balcony overlooking the grounds.
From here you can go upstairs again to a master suite with double bed, seating area and en suite bathroom. This is a great space for a family, or even an extended family trip with grandparents.
Food
The holiday homes at Budock Vean are self catering but you can choose to eat in the restaurant and they have some really good deals for guests to take advantage of. We chose to eat in the restaurant on one of the evenings and the food was really good. We tucked in to perfectly summery salads filled with avocado, puy lentils and herbs, and delicious starters of Falmouth Bay scallops with shallots, orange and rocket.
While the children feasted on soup, melon and sorbet to start.
The main courses ranged from a chick pea and vegetable stew that was bursting with flavour, and locally caught fish dishes with sautéed potatoes and fresh tasty beans,
To fish and chips for the children which they really loved.
And my chocolate mousse to finish was just perfect.
We were really impressed by Budock Vean's commitment to local suppliers and supporting regional food.
A trip to Cornwall to Budock Vean's self catering holiday homes – the best bits
We loved the way the holiday homes were furnished with knitted pouffes and a great log fire for cooler days. There were some lovely little details around the house that made it feel very luxurious and yet it also felt a relaxing space to be in with children with nothing too breakable around.
Obviously having all of the facilities that the hotel offers, whilst being self catering, is such a bonus. If you want to take a meal you can and the swimming pool is there as is the golf, tennis and croquet lawn. It's such a great way to take a self catering break with all the benefits of a hotel.
Worth Bearing in Mind
The accommodation is split level so if you have very young children you may want to all stay on the ground floor together rather than make use of the master suite on the top floor. This is what we did but I can definitely see that as the children are a little older that top space would be much more useful.
Child Friendly?
The holiday homes are very child friendly with a great space for a family to relax and feel at home whilst having so much on their doorstep to do. As well as everything the hotel offers there is also the wonderful Koru Kayaking who operate out of Budock Vean's own little marina – we took a fantastic trip out with them to see all the local sea life and wildlife nearby.
We also visited Trebah gardens with its own private beach which was a great trip out with everything you need to create your own Famous Five adventure.
In all we love Budock Vean and it really is the perfect Cornish getaway and for us the self-catering homes are an ideal way for families to stay and enjoy everything they have to offer.
